This year Green Storm Racing is accepting new members and blazing through 2011 with a new format!! Yes, we will be racing up and down the eastern seaboard and taking awards, but we will hopefully doing it with tons and tons of new members!!!
Everyone knows that the sport of triathlon is super expensive and we hope you have been saving your pennies…..So to alleviate the strain on the pocketbook, we have dropped the yearly donation fee to $45 from $175 allowing more athletes to become part of a multi sport community, without breaking the bank.

THE GREEN STORM BLOWS INTO NYC TRIATHLON WITH IT’S BIGGEST TURNOUT EVER!!

On a humid, NYC morning Sean Green and 40 of his Green Storm Racers were eager and ready to go. Some chose to cheer, but most of the storm troopers came to compete! This was New York’s 10th year anniversary of the Nautica New York City triathlon and at 5am in the morning the weather was perfect for a race. 36 racers started the race and all 33 toed the finish line. The bright spots of the day were Magdalena Mango finishing (3rd in Age Group), Nicky Wiesmann (5th in Age Group) and Paige Laverty (6th in Age Group). Hopefully, in 2011 we can bring more Storm Troopers to this amazing race and compete for the Tri Club Championship!!!

GSR RACES HARRIMAN, MONTAUK & STATEN ISLAND PANCAKE TRIATHLONS…..AND COME UP BIG!!!

The Green Storm Racing Team showed up at 3 different multisport races this past Saturday. Our newest member Shannon Mertz raced and finished The Mighty Montauk Olympic triathlon in an amazing time of 2:24 :10. Pat Scanlon, Kat Spitzberg, Joe Bachana, Lara Harris, Stu Bagedonow, Alex Nicas and Steven Rubin tackled the hardcore hills of SBR at Harriman and Joey B. walked away with a 3rd place age group finish!! Way to go Joe!! Meanwhile at Staten Island “Flat as a Pancake Du/Triathlon”, 19 athletes strolled in and 6 walked away with podium finishes!! Alexa Baggio (3rd), Nicky Wiesmann (1st), Lili Guiscardo (3rd) and Paige Laverty (1st) (Above) all took Age Group Triathlon awards. In the Duathlon Brian Chappell finished 1st in the Clydesdale Division Gloria Uhm took 3rd Women overall!! Also finishing strong was Mark De Vera, James Ellengold, Kelly Wolfson, Ludovic Bony, Sara Hasson, Trey Muldrow, Jessica Bay Blywiess, Serap Kilinc, Courtney Chappell, Megan Forb and Mark Gitlen. Congrats to our own Nori Tokumasu for competing in The Mahattan Island Marathon Swim. Nori was a part of a 4 man team that finished in 3rd place and swam the 28.5 miles in 8:24:47!! Wow!!

MANGO GOES 5 FOR 5 AT BLACKBEAR!!

Green Storm Racing’s own Maggie Mango takes first in yet another triathlon.That right folks….3rd year veteran Magdalena Mango has raced in only five triathlons and has run away with first place age group victories in every single race!! This time it was at The Black Bear Sprint Triathlon in the lovely Poconos mountains. The Black Bear Sprint course sported a crystal clear 750m lake swim, a hilly 12 mile bike and a challenging 3.2 mile run course. Mango finished in 1:11:38 posting a 7:32 minute swim, 40:14 bike and a 21:02 run giving her a 6th place overall finish and a 1st place 20-24 age group podium appearance. Mango plans to move back to NYC for the summer and really focus on her training. Watch out world!!! Who knows what this girl will achieve with some solid training. Congrats girl!!!!!

TABATA TRAINING!!

Hello Guys..

Before you read this remember that every coach and every trainer has their own theory on how an athlete should train. Remember every athlete is not created equal….so some workouts could reap benefits on some and not others. find what works well with your own body. Make sure when we do train, we allow a proper warm up of the muscles we are about to use and focus on proper technique when carrying out the exercises and movements. The following is a brief description of Tabata Training. TT is similar to interval training…..but still a slightly different method of training. Tabatas force the athlete to work at maximal effort (8-9 on a scale of 10 levels of exertion) for 20 seconds and rest for 10 seconds until a desired amount of time is achieved. Some use Kettle bells, some use Wind sprints, elliptical machines, some also use Pull Ups & Push Ups. Either way, this type of training will eat you up and spit you out. You get out..what you put in!! Don’t go weak when you should be pushing yourself to maximal effort!!The next time you get to the gym try sets of 4 minute cycles of these following exercises (Use 90 secs of recovery time after each 4 min cycle) – 1. Burpees with push ups 2. Jump squats 3. Pull Ups or modified pull ups 4. Jump split lunges 5. Jack Knife Abs crunches.
I guarantee this will be the hardest 20 minutes of your life!!!

CROSS TRAINING IN THE OFF SEASON!!!

Hello Athletes!!!
As these Fall/Winter months roll through, I have stressed working on your weaker disciplines. This in all regards is true. If you want to speed up your run, then a Winter of mile repeats should be on the agenda. The same tides in for the other disciplines of this wonderful sport. Get it done!! For those (such as myself), that use triathlon as a healthy alternative to boring gym exercises, one might take into consideration the great art of “Cross Training”. Cross training is a great way to break the monotony of having to only swim, bike and run. Try other sports that involve other muscle groups : Basketball, Tennis, Boxing to name a few. Triathlon is a sport that focus on linear movement solely…straight forward. By adding in other activities that get the athlete moving laterally, such as Basketball and Tennis, the athlete fires up muscles that may have lay snoozing during the triathlon season. Cross training is also a great way to keep your daily workouts fresh and exciting.

Yoga, Pilates & Strength training are also essential aspects of of cross training that work well with any multisport exercise regiment. So keep moving and keep it fresh!! Come join us!!!!!

NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS.

Hello Guys and Happy New Year!!!
Let’s talk about New Year resolutions and how to achieve your  goals in 2010. Most important thing is to set realistic goals for yourself in  2010. Goals that are attainable. Don’t set super strict restrictions  on yourself….unless you have been preparing yourself for them,  leading up to your start date. Don’t go from pigging out on food and  alcohol and not exercising, to a super clean diet and hours of daily  exercise. This is a formula for guarantee failure. Try to slowly  change your your eating habits by cutting out processed food, then  move on to alcoholic beverages and so on. Set a long term goal, but also have a short term plan to  achieve the long term goal. My goal is to lose 6-8lbs (focusing on fat  %) every 30 days until our triathlon season starts in May…..or until  I feel I’m at my desired weight for optimal performance at my sport.  This way I will focus on 30 days, instead of 5 months to acheive my  2010 fitness goal.
*****Remember one can lose at most 2lbs a  week…..anything over that is probably water  weight.***** Most important fact of achieving weight loss goals in nutrition.  Some say nutrition counts for 85% of weight loss. Once you start  eating healthy, it carries over to all parts of your weight loss plan.  So focus on starting slowly and then building up towards your overall  fitness goals for 2010. Good Luck!!!!

REAL RYDERS ARE REAL!!!

On a cool fall night, Joe Bachana, Mark Gitlen, Jim Parisi & Sean Green of GSR attended their first RealRyder spin class at Ride The Zone, a spin studio on 67th and 3rd ave. The 6:30pm class was half full and only 45 minutes, but that didn’t stop the energy from reaching the roof. These bikes are pretty amazing! In a nutshell, if you have a problem with bike handling, engaging your core or an uneven pedal stroke…..these bikes will expose it. The Realryder bike move constantly!!! Whether it’s left to right or just a steady wobble while you ride, the rider needs to stabilize on every pedal stroke. At first it takes a while to get use to it, but once you get the hang of it, the workout will have you drenched in sweat!! (Well, it had me soaked after 15 minutes.) We did climbing drills, one arm leaning drills and so much more…you name it we tried it. Overall, I give the RR workout a 9 out of 10 stars. Great music and the instructor Nicky was perfect…..very motivating, but not too talkative. Always a plus!! The great thing about this class is that there is only a $15 walk in fee for all class before 7:30am and after 4:30pm…..but don’t get shut out!!!
